England dealt India a bruising 31-run victory in the World Cup clash between the two sides at Edgbaston on Sunday, getting one step closer in the process to reach the semi-finals.
At the end of the game, India stood at 306-5, falling short of the 338-run target set by England.
What would victory have meant for each side?
For second-place India, it was always simple ─ win in Birmingham and Virat Kohli’s team joins Australia in the semifinals.
For fifth-place England, Eoin Morgan’s team needed to beat India ─ which no team has done so far ─ and also defeat 2015 finalist New Zealand in their last group game on Wednesday to advance. Two wins in two games and England will be through.
A loss, however, would have taken England’s fate out of their own hands and opened the door to fourth-place Pakistan. Before the match, Pakistan were a point ahead of England — but had played one more game — and sixth-place Bangladesh, who were a point behind England.
