Renowned writer, poet, researcher, translator, author of religious works, senior editorial member of Aalami Akhbar, prolific author of numerous books, and medical practitioner, Shams Jilani, passed away on the evening of March 31 at the age of 93 in Vancouver, Canada.

Shams Jilani served as the Associate Editor, Bureau Chief (Canada), and Editor of Religious Affairs at Aalami Akhbar. Over the past 17 years, he contributed thousands of articles and serialized writings to the newspaper.

Writers, poets, and researchers working to keep the Urdu language alive in foreign lands are engaged in a noble struggle—a Jihad bil-Qalam (struggle through the pen), which holds a far greater virtue than Jihad bil-Saif (struggle by the sword). Shams Jilani was among the foremost of such literary figures, belonging to a generation of writers who won hearts not through the assertion of age but through their insightful study and impactful writing.

His writings on Islamic topics held a distinguished place, and his poetry also reflected a deep concern for the Muslim Ummah. His association and literary contributions to Aalami Akhbar have been a source of honor and guidance for all.

Some of his published works include Surah Fatiha Aur Iske Taqazay (The Demands of Surah Fatiha), Islam Aur Huqooq-ul-Ibad (Islam and the Rights of People), Qissey Mukhliseen Ke (Stories of the Sincere), Hazrat Imdadullah Muhajir Makki Aur Haft Masail (Hazrat Imdadullah Muhajir Makki and Seven Issues), Sada Ba Sahra (A Call in the Wilderness), Guman Moatabar (A Credible Thought), Atam Hai Insan (Man is Supreme), Bunyadiat Zayabetis (Fundamentals of Diabetes), and his most recent book, Seerat-un-Nabi ﷺ – Roshni Hira Se (The Biography of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ – Light from Hira).

The editorial board of Aalami Akhbar extends its deepest condolences to the late Shams Jilani’s daughter, sons, and the rest of his family. His passing is a significant loss for Aalami Akhbar. We pray that Allah Almighty grants him forgiveness and a place in His infinite mercy.

Editor-in-Chief, Aalami Akhbar, and Editorial Board Members
