Translation of Dr. Shams Jilani “Roshni Hira Say”
The start of Azan & the invitation to the nearby Jewish tribes for an agreement
Chapter (98)
During last section we discussed the different hadith in which Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) quoted regarding his affiliations & bonding with the Ansars of Madinah Al Munawwara. We also reached up to the point where the construction of Masjid Al Nabawi was completed. We exactly don’t know when Azan has been started. But it seems that mosque & ritual of Azan has been related to each other. It happens like that when the construction of Masjid Nabawi got completed then it was thought what will be the mode of calling the people. Means, how they will be gathered at one place on regular intervals for the prayers. Some people suggested that the fire can be kindled at high place. But it has some major issues; one of them was its imitation with the fire worshippers. Second major challenge was the rain. What will happen if weather was not favorable? Third, there will always be a risk associated in kindling the fire as it can burn the neighboring localities in the case of accident. For some time, the people start to call for the prayers in the street of Madinah Muwwara. But this was also resource extensive style. It needs number of the people at one time. Then a suggestion came to tie a bell on a high tower & it will serve as a purpose for calling the people. But Almighty Allah didn’t like the imitation with disbelievers. So first, Hazrat Umar bin Zaid (RA) sighted a dream in which he saw the Azan. He came to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) & explained about his dream. He said that I saw a man who was cladded in two sheets of green color, & he was circumbulating around me. In his hand, he was holding a big bell & I requested him to provide this bell. He replied, what will you do from this bell? I replied, we will call the people for prayers by this bell. He replied, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah. Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, Ashadu anna Muhammadan Rasool Allah. Ashadu anna Muhammadan Rasool Allah., Hayya ‘ala-s-Salah. Hayya ‘ala-s-Salah, Hayya ‘ala-l-Falah. Hayya ‘ala-l-Falah., Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar!, La ilaha illa Allah.
On listening this, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, that what you have seen in the dream is true. Please explain this dream word by word to Bilal (RA) as his voice is louder than you. When Hazrat Bilal (RA) recited the Azan in a loud voice, Hazrat Umar bin Khattab (RA) was resting at him home. Immediately, he covered himself with a piece of cloth & came in the court of beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Then he said, O Prophet (PBUH), I swear in the name of Almighty Allah who sends you with the message of truth. I also saw the same dream. On listening this Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, then I would like to thanks Almighty Allah.
