Former foreign minister Hina Rabbani Khar has strongly criticised the recent US airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, calling them a violation of international law and the United Nations Charter.
Speaking in Geo News programme “Jirga” hosted by Saleem Safi, Hina Rabbani warned that the move sets a “dangerous precedent” and could escalate regional tensions.
She said that Pakistan had condemned the US action in “clear and strong terms,” while noting that several Western allies, including the United Kingdom, Australia, and the European Union (EU) countries, either endorsed the strikes or remained silent.
“These strikes go against everything the UN Charter stands for,” Hina said. “It is disappointing to see major powers endorsing actions that undermine international law.”
“The US had earlier said it would not get involved in the Israel-Iran conflict. Even President Trump had voiced opposition to direct engagement. Trump then said the US would wait for two weeks — and now suddenly, there is an attack on Iranian nuclear sites.”
She further warned that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East may further escalate, particularly following recent US military actions.
“Iran is already on the negotiating table,” she said. “But Israel has unleashed a wave of bloodshed in the Middle East, and no one can say for certain what will happen next.”
Speaking on regime change in Iran, Hina said: “Regime change in Iran has been their [Israel and US] old ambition,” warning that past attempts at regime change in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, and Libya have led to prolonged instability. “They haven’t learned from history,” she concluded.
