Pakistan said on Friday that besides sending peacekeeping missions, efforts should also be made to politically engage parties in conflict zones for permanent and durable peace.

Taking part at the United Nations Security Council’s open debate on training and capacity building of UN peace missions, Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi said that Pakistan’s role in UN peacekeeping missions reflected “our efforts for world peace at large.”

She said that despite challenges, Pakistan has been contributing to UN peacekeeping missions as a frontrunner and a major stakeholder.

Lodhi said that Pakistan was committed to the UN peace missions and its peacekeeping operations for the sake of world peace.

She said Pakistan was one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping missions with over 5,000 troops serving in flashpoints around the world.

Lodhi said that the United Nations Military Observers Group in India and Pakistan was working in an unfavourable environment in the volatile Kashmir region along the Line of Control.

She also said that Pakistan has also offered training of UN peacekeeping forces and it has the distinction of being the chair of UN peacekeeping missions.
