Uhud

Section 167

During last section we ended up to the point where the background of the
battle of Uhud was discussed. It was the abrupt end of the trade routes
after the battle of Badr that leads to the battle of Uhud. As we discussed
that seizing a huge caravan of Makkan was a huge blow on them. Abu
Sufiyan returned to Makkah after this. He had made a big investment;
this caravan was loaded with so much wealth that even Baitul-Mal
received around twenty thousand dinars as a part of Khums. If this
caravan would be saved then imagine how much mercenaries can be
hired by the Makkans with such a huge amount as this was a common
practice in warfare of Arabia in those days. As you see in the battle of
Badr, the majority of the Quraysh leaders sent other people to fight in
their place. When Abu Sufyan bin Harb reached back to Makkah, there

was a common mourning due to the confiscation of caravan. Ikrama bin
Abu Jahl, who likes his father, did not let any chance of opposition pass.
And he was anxious to take revenge of his father. He fanned the flames
for another war. So Abdullah bin Rabi', Ikramah bin Abu Jahl, and
Safwan bin Umayyah formed a delegation and approached the people of
Quraysh and said, "O group of Quraysh! Muhammad (pbuh) has
destroyed you. Our good people have been put to death. That's why you
should fight our war against Muhammad (PBUH). Help me. So that we
can avenge our men. According to Ibn Ishaq (RA), the glory of the
revelation of this verse is this. On the spot and it was revealed to them
about the people that we are presenting the proverbial translation of.
"Indeed, those who are staying on the path disbelief. And want to spend
their wealth to block the path of Allah. But they will gain nothing from it
except regret and despair, and those who disbelieved will be gathered in
hell.” Abu Sufyan and all the Quraysh and their allies prepared for war
at the instigation of these people. In which Banu Tahamah and Banu
Qana Na, who were under their influence and allies, were included. No
only this but the Quraysh also contacted each man individually. Among
them was Amr bin Abdullah Hajji who was arrested on the occasion of
the Battle of Badr and when he confessed his polygamy and poverty, the

Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) released him without ransom. He was
sent by Safwan earlier too and when he was arrested, he did not even
take the news.
