February 10,2021 is an auspicious day for the citizens of Pakistan who can anticipate a future where there is greater protection for those with psychological disability.
A five member bench of Supreme court commutes death sentences of 3 mentally ill prisoners the -kanizan Bibi, Imdad Ali & Ghulam Abbas who have respectively spent 30,19,& 15 years on death row.
All these suffer from schizophrenia, a severe mental health disorder.
Pakistan ends death penalty for prisoners with severe mental health problems.
This is a tremendous achievement of JPP.
No more mentally ill on death row.

SARAH BELAL
The Founder & Executive Director of the Justice Project Pakistan , lead the legal team from Lahore.
She is the first female lawyer to speak out for the rights of prisoners especially those on death row. She has made extraordinary achievements in bringing Justice to the poorest of the poor. She says
“Legal field throughout the world is very male dominated field, not only in Pakistan but also in the developed countries & this is challenging for me”
Barrister Sarah Belal is the source of inspiration in Pakistan even in the whole world.
She is a foreign qualified lawyer, belongs to a prosperous family but thought about the poor convicts.
This proud Pakistani daughter is the recipient of 2016
* Franco-German Human Rights Prize.
Granted to only 16 Human Rights activists throughout the world.
In December 2016
* Human Rights Award also awarded by the president of Pakistan.
In 2013 Sarah won the prestigious
* Green Global Fellowship _ ma ng JPP the first Pakistani organization to be recognized in the fellowship’s 25 years history.
Sara is mostly out of the country but she returned to Pakistan to help the poor & helpless prisoners. She fought long legal battle for the death row prisoners including kanizan Bibi whose story is heartbroken .
she was arrested in a murder case in 1989 when her age was only sixteen years. This poor girl was a housemaid & was wrongfully convicted. She was ruthly tortured & abused in police custody for several days.
Her poor father, who was her only caretaker since the death of her mother in infancy, waited for for desperately outside the police station, unable to apply for bail because he had no money.
She has spent over three decades behind the bar as a result she is severely mentally ill. In 2000 she was diagnosed with schizophrenia.
She has not spoken a word in years
She has a hard time communicating what she wants.
Some days she is unable to even feed or clothe herself.
She spent more time in the care of prison n officials instead of medical practitioners.
On the 10 of February, 2021The Honorable Supreme Court of Pakistan announced its landmark verdict in the case of 3 death row prisoners with mental illnesses. One of these prisoners is kanizan Bibi Pakistan, the only woman on death row awaiting execution. Her death penalty commuted to life imprisonment & she will be soon a free woman
The court also ruled that she would not be left on the streets would be treated at the Punjab Institute of Mental Health first & after recovery, she will be sent home.
As a result of the tireless efforts of Sarah Belal & her legal team, this poor innocent prisoner got justice & was saved from execution.
