The Prophet's ﷺ son- in- law Al- Aas accepted Islam

Section: 149

In the previous episode, we were talking about the acceptance of the Islam by
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) son-in-law Al-Aas. Let’s complete the incident.
During previous section, we ended that Hazrat Zianab (RA) came to Madinah
& stayed there while her husband was in Makkah as narrated by Ibn Ishaq
(RA). Islam had differentiated between the two, even before the conquest of
Makkah, he was out for the purpose of trade in Syria. He himself unconcerned
about the wealth, and the people of Makkah had given them some of their
amounts for the purpose of the trade. While he was returning from the
business trip, the troops that the Prophet (ﷺ) sent to explore the routes
caught him. It should be noted that this was the time when the people of
Medina and people of Makkah were in a state of war, so this force took control
of the property. But he escaped and somehow managed to reach Hazrat

Zainab (R.A.) in Madinah and upon seeing them, Hazrat Zainab (R.A.) stood on
the women's platform and announced loudly that I had given shelter to Abu
Al- Aas.

Prophet ﷺ said: "O People! Did you heard what I heard, they said yes! Then
he said, "Listen to the oath of the One in Whose hand is the life of Muhammad,
that I did not know anything until I heard the voice that I heard, the thing is
that every Muslim has a right to give shelter to the common man." Then Holy
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) went to him and asked Hazrat Zainab (RA) to
take care of him. But do not let him come to you in private as a husband
because you are not lawful for him. After that, it was said to those people that
you are aware of this person's relationship with us, and now you have taken
his wealth. If you treat him well and return his property, then we like it. And if
you refuse, you have more right to do so. Because this comes to you in the way
of Allah. These people said, O Messenger of Allah, whatever you like, we like it
too. Therefore, the wealth & the goods of Abu Al Aas was returned by the
Muslims.

From among them they were returned until someone came with his water
carrier & while others brought his pitcher, thus all his goods were returned to
them and nothing was lost. After that, Abu al- As went to Makkah with all the

goods and gave to every one of the Quraish who had goods and the share of
those who participated in the trade. Yes, people said, May Allah reward you
well, we have nothing left. We found you righteous and honorable. They said: I
bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant
and Messenger. So now Allah has returned your property to you and I am
freed from the burden of trust and I have also accepted Islam, so I am going
back to the Prophet's court and he came to Madinah.

Further Ibn Ishaq (RA) narrated that Hazrat Dawood bin Al- Hussain (RA) told
me and he narrated a hadith from Ikramah (RA) that the Messenger of Allah
(PBUH) gave Hazrat Zainab (RA) six years later in terms of marriage and did
not renew it in any way. There is a tradition of the honesty of Hazrat Abu Al-
Aas from Hazrat Abu Ubaidah and Abdullah Waris (RA) Al- Tanuri that when
he was returning from Syria with wealth and was surrounded, he asked him. It
was said that if you accept Islam, we will return this property to you and you
can keep it, but they refused saying that I should betray the foundation of my
Islam out of trust endowed to me by others, how bad is that?
