Translation of Dr. Shams Jilani “Roshni Hira Say”
Virtue of the people of Badr and the conquest of Sawiq
Section: 159
During last section we were discussing the virtues of the People who were either martyred in the battle of Badr or participated in battle of Badr. In continuation of the same point, there is another hadith.
In Bukhari’s well- known Hadith with Angels, Bukhari says that Ishaq bin Ibrahim and Jarir bin Yahya bin Saeed, Mu’adh bin Rafa’ah bin Rafi’ bin Zaraqi and he related to his father who participated in Badr. It has been narrated that when Gabriel was present in the Battle of Badr, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) asked that those who are at that time fighting shoulder with shoulder with the infidels, what’s your view regarding these people. On this Gabriel replied that these people will be considered among the best Muslims.
Ghazwah Bani Salim or Ghazwah Sawiq: Ibn Ishaq (RA) has written that Muhammad Ja’far Bin Zubair and Yazid Bin Ruman etc. narrated from him with reference to Abdullah (RA) Bin Ka’b, who was the most knowledgeable among the Ansar that when Abu Sufyan reached back and the other defeated Quraysh began to reach him, he became very angry and swore that he would not sit down with patience until he will fight a war with the Holy Prophet once more. He also take the vow that he will not even pour water on his head for the ritual ablution. So he left for Madinah with a hundred of the best horsemen from Quraysh. He left, thinking that he would enter from the right side of Madinah at night when the people of Madinah were sleeping and kill him at night. First he went to Nahwiya, and then he proceeded from there and reached the foot of the mountain called Nib, which is situated between Makkah and Madinah. From there he reached the Jewish settlement of Banu Nazir in the darkness of the night where he saw a light in the house of Ibn Akhtab and he knocked on his door but he was afraid and did not open the door. Desperate from here, he went to the chief of Banu Nazir, Salam bin Mishkam, and knocked on his door. Salam bin Mishkam not only opened his door for the hospitality but also gave him few people for the war. After that, he proceeded to get the news of the people of Madinah. But by then the dawn has appeared. So he camped nearby and took some dry wood and lit a bonfire there. Meanwhile, two people came here by chance, one of them was Ansar of Madinah and the other was their ally. When he was taken to Abu Sufyan, he killed him. When the news reached to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), he also left Madinah with a good number of companions to fight him and stopping him to attack Madinah. It’s apparent that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was aware of the fact that when he left Madinah, the Companions asked whether Abu Sufyan would be confronted. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) gave the answer in the affirmative. But his turn did not come, as soon as he found out that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) had left to suppress him, he immediately fled with his companions and died. Abu Sufyan had also written some poems on this occasion in praise of Ibn Mishkam, the leader of the Jews. In which he apologized for his escape. Which are often mentioned in the chronicles? His longing to fight with Holy Prophet (PBUH) remained in his heart. Where Abu Sufyan stayed on that day, this place is called Sawiq, and because this place was closed by Bani Saleem, that’s why this battle has been recorded in history as the battle of Bani Saleem. Otherwise, it has no connection with Bani Saleem. This was the last battle of the second Hijri that ended without any fight. Regarding history, we would like to submit that there is a great collection of wonderful poetry in the history. But we also saw a flaw in it and this has been pointed out by Ibn Hisham that the verses in it praising the bravery of the infidels are only a sight. I would only like to add to this that we have just read in the last text that according to the infidels they were not fighting against human beings but against some invisible beings. And they used to arrest them the way they wanted, according to them, it was as if their hands were tied. So, the Companions whose friendship and enmity were only for Allah and the Messenger (PBUH), how could they praise any polytheist, so such verses have been wrongly attributed to them? The rest will follow
