The Wimbledon main draws get underway today and there is big money on offer for both male and female competitors. Tournament chiefs have bumped up the prize money significantly since last year’s edition, giving players even more incentive to go on a deep run at SW19 – as if the prospect of lifting the prestigious title was not enough on its own.
Wimbledon chiefs have pledged £775,000 to each of the two losing semi-finalists, and £400,000 for each of the four losing quarter-finalists. A run to the fourth round is worth £240,000, while a third-round appearance will net a player £152,000, and £99,000 is reserved for stars who lose out in the second round.
