Theresa May has accepted the resignation of Amber Rudd as Home Secretary, Downing Street has said. The decision comes after mounting pressure over the Windrush scandal and whether or not Rudd knew of immigration targets.

An internal Home Office memo published last week set out nationals targets for achieving 12,800 “enforced returns” in 2017-18. It was copied to Ms Rudd’s office, but she said she had not seen it. Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott, who called for the resignation earlier in the week, said Ms Rudd had “done the right thing”. She had been due to make a statement in parliament regarding the targets on Monday.
