Jamiat Ulema-e Islam (F) chief and presidential candidate Maulana Fazalur Rehmna on Monday urged Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari to review his decision of fielding Aitzaz Ahsan as PPP’s candidate.
Stressing on opposition to field a joint candidate for presidential elections, Rehman revealed that Pakistan Muslim League NAWAZ (PML-N) raised objections on PPP’s nominee. Rehman warned opposition votes would sunder by fielding two or more candidates.
Question mark on Fazal s role
On the other hand, PPP was left flabbergasted after the opposition alliance announced JUI-F chief as their pick for presidential elections. PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari stated there would always be question mark on controversial role of Fazalur Rehman as latter advocated PPP’s stance in huddles of opposition.
Zardari directed to increase contacts with all political outfits including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The stalemate in talks forced opposition to field two candidates for presidential elections. Opposition led by PML-N—except PPP—fielded JUI-F chief Fazalur Rehman while PPP fielded senior politician Aitzan Ahsan.
On the other hand, PTI picked Arif Alvi as Mamnoon Hussain’s successor. With votes of opposition divided, Alvi leads the race and is expected to win the polls without any stern competition.
