Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate Shahzad Waseem won the election on a vacant Senate seat from Punjab, defeating Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) Khawaja Ahmed Hassan with a close margin on Wednesday.
Waseem bagged 181 while Hassan secured 169 of the total 351 Punjab Assembly votes, Express News reported.
Polling commenced at 9am and continued till 4pm.
The provincial election commissioner performed the duties of the presiding officer for the election. The seat was vacated after Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar resigned to take up his new assignment as the provincial governor.
While submitting his nomination papers earlier in September Waseem said that he is confident the party will win the seat, saying that “I decided to submit papers on the directions of the party.”
Sarwar was appointed the governor of Punjab after PTI formed the government at the Centre and in Punjab.
Sarwar was elected Senator on a PTI ticket for a general seat from Punjab. In an election on March 3, 2018, he received 44 first priority and two second priority votes.
He took oath as the 33rd governor of Punjab on September 5, 2018. Previously, he served as the 31st governor from August 5, 2013 to January 29, 2015.
