Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub on Wednesday rejected suggestions of any ongoing backdoor negotiations with the establishment, asserting that the grand alliance’s foremost demand will be the holding of general elections.

Ayub launched a scathing attack on the ruling parties, accusing the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of duplicity and internal discord over the ruling coalition’s dispute over the canals project. “PPP and PML-N are stabbing each other in the back,” he said.

Responding to recent remarks by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah, who had suggested that political matters could be resolved through an apology, Ayub scoffed at the notion. “Rana Sanaullah says if we ask for forgiveness, will everything end?” he questioned.

Ayub also raised alarm over Pakistan’s deteriorating fiscal position. “There is a deficit of more than Rs706 billion, how can the economy function?” he asked.
