Hooray and Kudo to Ali Raza son of Firoz and Siddika Jessa for boldly solemnising his gay marriage. This is the first in our Khoja history and hope not the last! Slow but sure changes are happening.

As Dr Hasnain Walji rightly said, we as a community must take the reign of Shariat in our own hands rather than rely on scholars who are not willing to move on with time and keep holding to ancient thoughts. Islam is a progressive religion and it evolves with change of time and so should we.

The mother of the groom is the Secretary General of Nasimco, the regional body affiliated to the World Federation of KSIMC. This tells us a lot. Our leaders today are far more educated, brilliant, intellectual, liberal, forward thinking and very accommodating than their predecessors. It is a shame that such a historic marriage was neither solemnised at our own centre nor presided over by our local Imam.

Our honourable leaders at the World Federation, Africa Federation, Nasimco and Coej have three challenging tasks ahead of them:

1. Replace the regressive preachers in the community with modern and progressive scholars. We are bored, tired and fed up with Iraq and Iran affiliates. Almahdi Institute in Birmingham, UK is a perfect institution to fill in the gap.

2. Incorporate Solemnisation of Gay marriages in our constitution.

3. Arrange trainings for the Imams to conduct Islamic gay marriages.

Congratulation to Ali Raza, Nasimco and WF for this great revolution and achievement in our community. God bless you all!

  1. Wow “take the reign of Shariat in our own hands rather than rely on scholars?” Islam did not begin 1400 years ago, it started with creation of P. Adam, and never has the religion taught us to take Shariah in our own hands! The NASIMCO, WF or any other organization of Khojas or non Khojas alike must realize that they are primarily religious, specifically Islamic, organizations serving Islamic communities, and has no authority to make such statements. It is clear that the leadership is increasingly delving into issues that is only in an effort to justify its practices to the Ummah which are contrary to the teachings of the AhlulBayt and the Quran. It is thus imperative that scholars, like the one mentioned in the article, be as brave to speak up against this or any unIslamic practice.

In Shia theology only legitimate divine authority has the right to introduce, alter or abrogate previous divine commandments. As such, our directive is to follow the Marja, as commanded by the AhlulBayt, who have mastered the science of the study of extracting answers from authentic sources to address our jurisprudential needs. Whether that satisfies our definition of progressiveness or not is irrelevant, and what we accuse them or being narrow minded of, we too become equally guilty of.

If it is important for these individuals to practise based on what they think is right, so be it and the community should exercise tolerance, however the insinuation of the Marjaiyya not being progressive or moving with its time is outrageous and insult to the institution and adherents to our faith.

If the faith does not satisfy the materialistic needs of these individuals, they can revert to the Khoja Ismaili faith which allows for the flexibility they are looking for and pick the Marja/Imam of their liking, or practise as they feel fit without coercing our scholars and imposing their unfounded and uninformed opinions on the rest of the Ummah.

The rest of us are tolerant enough to say: “lakum deenukum waliya deen.”

  2. Eleventh Greater sin: Sodomy
The eleventh sin that is classified as a Greater sin is sodomy or homosexuality. This is verified from the sayings of Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (a.s.) and Imam ar-Riďa (a.s.). In fact it is a sin greater than adultery. Its retribution and punishment are more severe than for adultery. Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (a.s.) has stated:

“Penetrating the anal opening is a greater sin than penetrating the vagina. Certainly Allah destroyed a complete Umma (Umma of Hazrat Lut (a.s.) because they indulged in sodomy. Allah has not destroyed even one man for adultery”.1

    The Holy Prophet (S) says,

“A person who commits sodomy with a boy will acquire such a Janabat (impurity) that even all the water of this world cannot remove it. Allah will be wrathful at him and curse him. (That is He will take away His Mercy from him and will award Hell for him.) What a dreadful place it is! Then the Heavens shudder of it. And the person who allows another to mount him from behind to commit sodomy, then Allah puts him on the fringe of Hell (in extreme heat) and keeps him there till He completes the reckoning of all the people. Then He orders him to be put into Hell. One by one he is made to suffer all the punishments of Hell till he reaches the lowest stage. Then he never comes out from there.”2

    Sodomy is Kufr (disbelief)
Amir ul-Mu’minīn ‘Ali (a.s.) has said:

“Sodomy is a Greater Sin and carries punishment when a man mounts upon another man but does not penetrate. If he penetrates, it is kufr”

  3. I agree with Br.Ali and condemn such a marriage and the society which approves this type of marriage. Be it a Khoja or for that matter any sect of Islam who does not have any respect for the Holy Prophet and his pure progeny and is also against Maraja e Taqleed. Shame shame. Just doing good work will not save you from Allah’s punishment.

  4. Shameful indeed an act which calls for condemnation. If Islamic laws n leaders have no place anymore in guiding ummah then what kind of posts are the parents og this parson in question holding??? Seriously a question to ponder upon as such people may mislead the youth of our community so kick them out rightaway.

  5. Shameless ppl u dont follow any sunnah of imams and claimimg of fed up of iraqi irani affiliations ridiculous

  6. Do not make changes in Islam n stop condemning the marjas….
Alas, any community may it be khojas or non khojas, our religion is perfect it is never devided by sects, race, creed. We are one the followers of moula Ali,such practices spoil d name of Shia itna ashri

    Do not encourage….

  7. Shameless creatures justifying shameless acts. Why do they even need modern day schilars that should give them Sharia endorsement when they themselves have taken the sharia in their hand. May Allah(ta) hasten the reappearance of our master of the time(ATFS).

  8. Response to Ayaz Manji

    Salaamun alaykum

First of all, it comes as no surprise that Khojas are now engaging in same sex marriages. After all, we live in a time where the dominant, globalised, Coca Cola culture of today seeks to impose its views of right and wrong on other groups. Given the circumstances of the world today, it’s only natural some Muslims will become part of this trend. Don’t be so shocked, it was a long time coming, and there will be more such unions in the future. It is what it is.

Having said that, after reading that moronic forward by a certain Ayaz Manji calling for the Khoja community to normalise same sex relations and to encourage scholars and Imams to participate in their solemnisation, it is necessary to make a few blunt comments.

    1. Homosexual acts in Islam are haraam. There are no two ways about it. It’s in the Quran, and entire nations were destroyed by Allah because these acts had become the norm in society. There have been many Muslims who, under the guise of reform, have sought to make homosexuality an accepted part of the religion, but they have failed and always will. The bottom line is this: homosexuality is explicitly forbidden in the Quran, which is the unaltered word of Allah. If any Muslim doubts that the Quran is the unaltered Word of Allah, well, they’re not Muslim! Mr Manji can call for the reform of Islam as much as he likes, but he ought to keep in mind that if he’s not a brainwashed infiltrator parroting the beliefs of his colonialist masters, he’s ignorant, and ignorance, my friends, cost an afterlife.

    2. Given the facts mentioned in the first point, it is futile to push for something that is outside the fold of religious permissibility. If any Khoja Center becomes a site where same sex marriages are solemnised, it should be isolated and all those pseudo scholars who took part in it ought to be condemned and ostracised.

    3. Islam consists of a system of laws that have been codified into what we call the shariah. These laws have been extracted and deduced using the accepted sources, such as the Quran and Hadith, by people who have studied long and hard and have sought to unwaveringly follow the precedents set by ur Holy Prophet, his progeny and righteous companions. The day the shariah is taken into our own hands is the day it ceases to be the shariah.

    4. Times change, but not always in the right direction. There was a time when newborn girls were buried alive. If that time arrived again and became the socially accepted norm, does Mr Ayaz Manji suggest we should make that a part of our culture, even though it is forbidden in Islam? Sir, please use your head. You have the right to believe whatever you want, but do not insist on imposing your ideas on what ought to be on a religion that is practised by over a billion people. If you want same sex marriages to be normalised, as we East Africans say: sawa, say what you want. However, don’t push for it to be a part of a religion that we all practise, a religion explicitly forbids it. That is bid’ah, or religious innovation, and has been explicitly condemned by the Prophet. Homosexuality is something that is so strongly abhorred by Islam that in an Islamic government, it warrants the death penalty – and this law has been laid down not by our respected scholars from Iran, Iraq and elsewhere, but by Allah, the Holy Prophet, the Ahl al Bayt, and the righteous companions.

Islam is against homosexuality. That’s all there is to it. It is a condemned, sinful and reprehensible act. We live in a world ruled by Western culture. If homosexuality and same sex relations are not frowned upon in the West, that’s the West’s issue. Let the West decide its own path. But as Khojas and as Muslims, we state unequivocally that homosexuality and same sex relations are contrary to our religion and culture. We refuse that it be institutionalised in our communities. We call upon our leaders to take a very firm and unambiguous stand against this lest we be judged on the wrong side of Haqq by Allah and our Hidden Imam, may Allah hasten his reappearance.

  9. “If homosexuality and same sex relations are not frowned upon in the West, that’s the West’s issue. Let the West decide its own path. But as Khojas and as Muslims”

It’s clearly a khoja problem too and acceptable to some khojas. The cultural lense of communities who call themselves Muslims is the problem. Islam doesn’t belong to khojas Iranians Iraqis Africans or any other ethnicity. There is obviously a nationalistic self preservation agenda being used under the banner of Islam by Khojas and many other ethnic groups. May Allah hasten the appearance of his Imam to guide humanity.

  10. Ye shadi ho ya apasi rishta ho iska taluq FIRQE SHIA ASNAASHARI IAMI JAFFARI mazhab se koi taluq nahi hy aur ye khojas ismailee hy inko taqleed wagaira se koi taluq nahi hy ye log prince agah khan ko maante hy

aur galat mahol galat chalan galat tarbiyate waledain se ye halat hoti hy

  11. The very institution of gay and lesbian has been established to negate God and following Satanism. Islam came to abolish such belief to establish justice and peace and not to become followers of baseless desires which lead to evil in society and no value of self respect and respect to teaching of Quran and Hadith of Ahlulbayt Alaihisalam. Imam Ali Alaihisalam says in nahjul balagha, “A self-respecting man never commits adultery.”

  12. Shia itna ashri se naam hataa do tum log 12we ke opp me aaoge to tum khoja e lood naam rakho apne cast ka shame shame shame shame

  13. What you people are classifying as an “achievement” is a step towards attain the wrath of Allah(swt). The Quran, and Hadith as taught to us by Ahlulbayt (as) forbids such acts and is considered an abomination and a great sin. You say that “leaders today are far more educated, brilliant, intellectual, liberal, forward thinking and very accommodating than their predecessors”, well they may be more educated in worldly affairs, however when it comes to spirituality your leaders it seems have become illiterate, dull, and strayed away from the teachings of Ahlulbayt(as). Just remember this doesnt bode well for your community as a whole, and has a very negative impact on youths of our greater community.

  14. You realy have deviated too far from true the path of Islam. Your satanic deviant pathway shall only lead you to the final evil abode of the people of Lut, in the name innovative modernity.

  15. yae kam karna educate aor briliant hone ki elamat nahi balke jahalat ki ilamat hae .Kio kae jinho nae yae kaam kia hae woh apnae apko ko Imam Jaffar Sadiq(as) sae zyada educate aor briliant samajhte hae.shame on you.

  16. There are a large number of Muslims who struggle with same sex/homosexual/same gender attractions. Some of them engage in same sex relationships. Some of them don’t because they understand the teachings of their Creator who wants to keep them safe. Nabi Lut (as) tried to help his people by offering his daughters in marriage as a halal alternative. There are groups like StraightStruggle on yahoo where Muslims can get together and encourage each other to remain on the right path and look into understanding the core issues beneath these attractions. Iman Hussain (as) and his son (as) taught us that as long as we are on the path of truth then do not worry Allah (SWT) will take care of us even if we end up old and alone.

  17. It’s good that u people call yourself khojas. Such indecency would defame the great religion of Allah so you people better be khojas than shia ithna asharu

  18. Mr. Ayaj Manji

Its your Acheivement towards Hell and Towards Evil . After doing all shameless cowardly act don,t try to justify and wrap all Khoja Community people under you. You/Dr hasnain walji/or Secretory general are not khojas representative . You are nothing but a only a fuel of Hell and a Shaitan,s Worker. Hence just shut up your mouth and go to hell

  19. Auch devious far reaching agenda is at play here. This is well thought out well orchestrated plan to secularise, nay, demonise Shia Islam and Islam in general. The luciferian agenda was to strip humanity of belief in God. This has sought to infiltrate a people and adulterate it’s foundation of faith. God help us all!

  20. Sodomy is a major sin and the fact that there is a prescribed punishment for it in the Islamic penal code and also that of the earlier revelations proves that it is a sin against an express command. I wonder than why has Manji made this incident a forum against the Marajaye or made it an issue of progress and advancement. Had it been progressive the US penal code would not have levied fines against the priests and the bishops–the church in general.

  21. What surprises me is that Muslims want to remain Muslims and at the same time commit heinous sins. Imam Hussain (as) was prepared to sacrifice his children, relatives and companions to ensure that Islam remains intact and is not destroyed in the hands of Yazid. Does the culprits know about the punishment in Islam with reference to homosexuality? Do they want to go to hell-fire? The worst thing they did was to have public engagement and have publicity, for what? That they are shameless and deserve to be shun as their place if hell-fire?

  22. sharm in ko magar nahi aati ………

May ALLAH s curse be on those who are trying to revive IBLEESIAT and also preaching it
    shame on these fellows

  23. Did Dr Hasnain Walji say, “we as a community must take the reign of Shariat in our own hands rather than rely on scholars who are not willing to move on with time and keep holding to ancient thoughts. Islam is a progressive religion and it evolves with change of time and so should we.” I do not think so and it is defamatory statement. Did Hasnainbhai make a statement with reference to homosexuality and gay marriages? Never.

  24. I am ashamed as another Muslim to know about this sin being publicized. We should pray to Allah (s.w.t) that with the wasta of the Masoomeen and Ahlul Bayt (A.S), that along with the people in support and involvement of this sin, we too are guided and put on the right path. In times like this, it is important to help and not criticize a wrongdoer. The best way to help is to pray to the Almighty, who can change the impossible to possible.

  25. استغفراللہ ربی واتوب الیہ
This people getting few pounds in their account & want to take shariat in their hands. People are seen with wine glasses in their hands a total Anti Quran demonstration & they want place SHARIAT in such dirty and immoral hands.
O Allah we seek your protection. Please help this generation by sending your last Hujjat H Mahdi (atfs)
O Allah separate us from such people before you send your chastisement on them

  26. What surprises me is that the poor boy boy is being sodamanised daily and the parents and grandparents have given approval and the sin is being acknowledges publicly. What will happen if the boy visits countries where gays are being persecuted, as they have chosen to make it a public affair and the whole world knows about it. How stupid can these so called Muslims be. The boy should renounce his religion, he is no longer a Muslims. On the day of judgement, the boy, his parents and all those who had attended the public function will be equally be made accountable. The parents could have done their share and reformed the way, I know instances where the children initially use left hands to eat and have other bad habits, after being admonished by their parents, they have reformed. Should the 12th Imam (as) appear now, he is going to take a drastic action about the affair, there is no place to hide.

  27. One of the signs for the re-appearance of Al-Mahdi is where homosexuality will become common. Up until now it has been practised by non-Muslims and non-Shias. In Islam, homosexuality, a deviant behaviour, it seems a start has been made and thanks to Allah (SWT) that we find only a few supporters. Our Imam will appear with Zulfikar and heads will start to role. I am glad to see that some dignity still remains in that there are many opposition and all our institutions need to take a firm stand against it and some have already done so, I thank them. We should all take a drastic stand by immediately disassociating with all the homosexuals, cut tries with them and their relatives and friends, before it is too late. We should wake up in that corruption is being spread in the name of human rights and on individual choice. Those who serve our communities should sign to a protocol that they will nor encourage, in any way or form, to sins being committed and that they will immediately resign if they do so or are a part to it. My worry is that our children living in the West have been brain washed into indulging into promiscuity and it is the duty of our Madressa teachers to tackle such issues. The fact that parents, grandparents and relatives and fiends are supporting to sins being committed indicates that our knowledge about Islam is pathetic. One way forward is to test the knowledge in Islam before a membership is accepted.

  28. How can we now help the brother concerned here and his family? How do we move forward as a community? If the brother chooses to walk away from this relationship out of his free will to take the advice of his All Wise Loving Creator to no longer engage in a same sex relationship will we support and encourage him? Should we club together and fund his Ziyarat to Imam Hussain (as) so that he can supplicate for assistance in his struggle to Allah’s swt under the blessed dome? All supplications are answered there I can attest to that. (If the brother wants to of course). How would the Aimmah (as) have assisted their brother here? Should we look into the underlying factors behind his same sex attractions and look to help him resolve them instead or just condemning his mother and forcing her to resign and assuming that is sufficient?
Also why are we talking about sodomy at all? No evidence to suggest that the brother concerned promotes or is engaged in it. So let’s be careful okay. You know what the Quran says about people who accuse others with no witnesses.

  29. By undergoing a marriage gay ceremony with the approval of his parents and grand parents in public and distributing the photos, the boy and her mother have defied the religion and is proud of having committed the sin both are to be blamed. They are no longer Muslims. On the extreme case, in some countries honour killing is being practised on the basis that a daughter has defied the parents by choosing her own opposite partner and not the choice of theirparents.. A benefit of doubt can only be based on keeping the sins secret and asking Allah (SWT) for forgiveness for sins having committed in the past and ensuring sopping such practices. Being a gay is a disease and should be treated as such,. Did we have AIDS in the past and why has it become wide spread? What sort of a mother a boy has in that in stead of admonishing her son she is supporting him and making it public. Is she fit to serve the community, of course not. If we start condoning such practices it is bound to encourage more sins being committed in public. Drastic actions are needed. The Jama’t should expel the boy and the mother from the membership, as our centres which are based on Shia Islamic practices. Their supporters should also be warned for spreading fitna.

  30. Siddika has quit her post following the online attacks.
In an open letter, she explained how she had come to accept and love her son for who he is.
She wrote: “For us this is about standing up for Ali’s God given right to live a life that would not be filled with the burden of religious guilt and compounded by communal scorn and societal shame.
“The guilt and the scorn could potentially drown anyone and effect the human character. Many turn to drugs and alcohol (social vices) and some commit suicide.”
She added: “We chose not to have that for our son. We wanted him to be the best human being possible.
“When he chose Paul, we agreed to support him to settle down. It has been a painful and challenging journey that only a mother can understand.”
Siddika also said: “In moments of darkness, I realised that the only way for Ali to live an authentic life and not have to hide and fear rejection was to give him space to reach his human potential as God’s creation.”
How stupid can we be to accept the justification for committing a sin and saving her son from drugs taking and committing suicide and space to reach his human potential as God’s creation! Did this require publicity? The jahil Arabs during the time of the Prophet (PBUH), never made such an excuse for committing sins, nor is it a justification for commuting sins openly.

  31. Punishment of Sodomy

Once Khalid bin Valeed wrote to Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) that there was a man who was in the habit of getting the act of Sodomy committed on him (the – man). Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) who was the caliph then asked for Hazrat Ali (A)’s advice in the matter saying that the Arabs viewed the cutting of a person into pieces a very bad thing. Hazrat Ali (A) advised that the man in question should be burnt to death. The punishment was carried out accordingly. (Arjahul Matalib, p 126).

Similary during the caliphate of Hazrat Omar (RA) two men were seen committing the act of sodomy. When apprehended, one of them ran away, but the other was caught and brought to the court of the caliph.

Hazrat Omar (RA) when sought advice of the people in the matter, . All proposed different punishments to be awarded to the accused. Hazrat Omar (RA) then turned to Hazrat Ali (A) and asked for his advice in deciding the case according to the divine law. Hazrat A1i (A) advised the caliph to behead the man. When the punishment was carried out according to the advice of Hazrat Ali (A) and under the orders of Hazrat Omar (RA) and the body of the accused was being carried away, Hazrat Ali (A) stopped the people and said that there was another punishment yet which was to be awarded to the man who had committed such a serious crime. He then ordered the people to collect fire-wood and burn the dead body of the man.. The orders of Hazrat Ali (A) were accordingly carried out with the consent of the then caliph, Hazrat Omar (RA). (Wafi, vol. 9, p. 51).

Hazra Imam Sadiq (A) has said :“None from among men, who considers sodomy a correct action and having religious sanction, passes his life on earth without being hit by one of the stones from Allah by which He hit the nation of Lot, and he dies of it, but the people do not see it.”

    (Qasasul Ambia, p. 162).
