The battle of Lihaan & Dhat al-Riqa
There was also a concern in launching the attack that the Quraysh might come
to their aid. Therefore, the Prophet (PBUH) adopted the strategy of first
heading towards Syria instead of directly attacking the Banu Lihyan. He then
entered the territory of Banu Lihyan from the rear and sent a two-member
unit to gather intelligence on the Quraysh, who returned with the news that a
Quraysh armed unit, led by Khalid bin Walid, was stationed beyond Al-Uzaym.
Upon encountering the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) unexpectedly, Banu
Lihyan retreated to the mountains, and no battle took place. The Prophet
Muhammad (PBUH) then intended to perform the prayer at 'Asqan. Imam
Ahmad, citing three authentic references, writes that when the Prophet
Muhammad (PBUH) reached 'Asqan, he first performed the Zuhr prayer, and
afterward, he performed the 'Asr prayer in a manner where half the army
stood armed while the other half removed their weapons and prayed behind
the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Afterward, the remaining half performed the
prayer. In this way, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) led two prayers of two
rak'ahs each, as by this time, after the Zuhr prayer, the verse regarding the
Prayer of Fear (Salat al-Khawf) had been revealed.
Later, when the Prophet (PBUH) reached Banu Sulaym, the prayers were
performed in the same manner. It is also proven from the narrations of
Sahihayn that during the Battle of the Trench (Ghazwah Khandaq) and the
Battle of Khaybar, all prayers were offered in the same way, which led the
disbelievers to say that these people valued their prayers even more than
their own lives. A statement by Khalid bin Walid is also recorded in history,
where he said that he first saw the Muslims performing this prayer at Banu
Asqan. However, some scholars say that this verse was revealed later, during
the Battle of the Trench, and they have their own evidence. Allah knows best.

After this, the significant event of the year 4 AH was the Battle of Dhat al-Riqa.
There is much disagreement regarding the origin of its name and the exact
details of its occurrence. Some historians have written that it was named after
a tree under which the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) took shelter. Others have
said it was named after a mountain near which the Muslim army camped.
Some have written that by the time the Mujahideen (warriors) reached this
place, their feet had become wounded. Another account says that at that time,
there was no cloth available for the banner, so it was patched together, hence
the name Dhat al-Riqa. Whatever the reason, the cause of this battle was the
news that certain tribes, particularly Banu Ghatafan and Banu Tha'laba, were
preparing for mischief.
